Senior pet health care

Special Health Care for our Senior Pets

It’s natural that pets face more health risks as they age, just like us. As your pets get older, we recommend that they have regular health checks.

Cats from age 8 and dogs from 5 years (large breeds) and 8 years (smaller breeds) are our “senior citizens”.

Senior pet health care is so important. Often seemingly small changes can be early warning signs of medical conditions such as liver or kidney disease.  Arthritis is also really common and painful for your pets if left untreated. The earlier these are detected the more we can do to help your pet live a longer, healthier and pain free life.

Senior Pet Health Care Clinics

At Regans Veterinary Group we take the care of senior pets seriously and now offer Health Care Clinics specifically for our senior patients.

The clinics are run by our team of qualified veterinary nurses daily and usually last about 30 – 40 minutes.

We request that you bring a fresh urine sample from your pet to the appointment and you will be advised how best to do this when you ring to book the appointment.

At these clinics:

  • Your pet will have a full health check with a Registered Veterinary Nurse.
  • The urine sample will be tested.
  • A blood test will be carried out to check liver, kidney and thyroid function including a full blood count.
  • A blood pressure reading will be taken (please note you may be asked to leave your pet on site as a day patient to allow us to gain several readings)

The examination and tests will allow us to look for early, underlying signs of some of the following:

  • Dental Disease
  • Diabetes
  • Kidney failure
  • Liver function problems
  • Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism (overactive thyroid and underactive thyroid)
  • Hypertension (High Blood pressure)
  • Arthritis/pain
  • Anaemia (low number of red blood cells)

Most of these can be treated or managed with medication and/or diet and in some cases, surgery.

Further treatment

If we are concerned with any of our findings, we will refer you and your pet to one of our veterinary surgeons for a consultation. The vet will carry out a further assessment based on the test results and discuss the treatment options available for your pet.

The vet consultation and any medication, procedures or food prescribed will be chargeable separately.

The Healthy Pet Club members will be entitled to their usual 10% discount on any further consultations, products or services. Pets prescribed with any of the The Healthy Pet Club dedicated lifetime care medications will be entitled to 20% off the normal price.
